The report, published in the scientific journal JAMA Cardiology, describes how prolonged sitting affects people in 21 countries. According to the results of this study, sitting for long periods without daily breaks can harm your body in several ways.
As the ScienceAlert article states, sitting for 6-8 hours a day will increase the risk of heart disease and premature death by about 12-13%. And if the time spent in a sitting position is 8 hours or more, the probability of complications increases by 20%.
Many other scientific studies come to the same conclusion. A report published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine in 2019 found that prolonged sitting is associated with a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. In another study published in Lifestyle Medicine, scientists concluded that by sitting for 6-8 hours each day, people develop symptoms of hypertension, a musculoskeletal disorder.
Also, those who sit for more than 8 hours a day have a similar risk of death from smoking or obesity, according to the Mayo Clinic.
