Clinical trials conducted by scientists from the University of Columbia (USA) proved the existence of a fundamental error in the practical development of research methods with cognitive impairment. The theory itself, on the contrary, turned out to be correct – people’s passion for serious video games or intellectual tasks helps to delay the onset of age-related dementia. The nuance is that all old people react differently to different types of therapy.

The study involved 100 people over 70 with mild cognitive impairment. The first group did crossword puzzles, the second group played some video games. Consumption sessions of 30 minutes several times a week for a year and a half. It turned out that the cognitive performance of the group with crossword puzzles was somewhat better than that of the “gamers”, but did not delve into the study of the situation puzzled scientists.

First, the progress in the sicker people was more pronounced, however, their initial conditions were more severe, so it is not entirely clear how this is assessed. Secondly, old people are not interested in playing video games, because they are not familiar with this type of entertainment, while crossword puzzles are well known to them. Thirdly, you can solve crossword puzzles at any pace and at the request of the user, while games still have a set of conditions and restrictions – it is often inconvenient for old people to adapt to them.

The most interesting thing is that people who are familiar with video games remember that they note the best results in the field of cognitive functions in play therapy.
