The scammers launched massive attacks, especially against Russian users. A potential victim receives an email purportedly from law enforcement or other government agencies, warning them to strengthen their defenses against cyber threats.
The letter says you can download an attachment, which is an automated solution to increase security. If a user downloads such software, an encryption trojan that encrypts all data on the computer is immediately installed. The ransom amounts that attackers demand for decryption can reach up to 1.2 million rubles.
It was noted that the attack was large-scale, but at the same time, it was carried out from a legitimate service, which is not characteristic for such actions of hackers before.
