tumblr becomes less intolerant: the social network will stop sharing nude photos. Pornography continues to be banned, but it’s still a notable change from the total ban on nudity decided in 2018.
The company has the Community Guidance. “We are now allowing various new forms of artistic expression, creativity and art on Tumblr,” reads the new version of the policy. “This includes the depiction of human bodies (yes, including human bodies without clothing). So even if a creation contains nudity, sexual themes, or at least intended for an adult audience, you can still share them on Tumblr as long as you use the correct Community Label.”
Community labels are a form of self-moderation introduced in September. Tumblr allows users to share content that is intended for an adult audience, as long as the author clearly states that he is using the correct self-rating system. The content that is intended for an adult audience (not only nudity, but also messages that are about drugs, for example) are obscured by default and are not visible unless the user clicks on it.
“The representation of explicit sexual acts remains off limits on Tumblr,” the guidelines continue.
Tumblr may not be a suitable place for porn, but if you look at WordPress.com, we have policies there that allow topics that are not allowed on Tumblr these days. We want to normalize that kind of content as these policies have evolved over time and served their purpose very well.
had told Matt Mullenweg, CEO of Automattic, the company that owns Tumblr, several months ago.
