This conclusion was made by experts from the University of Vermont in the United States. They chose videos on TikTok with ten popular hashtags like #thinspiration, #fitspiration, #cheatmeal, #weightloss, #quarantine and more. Researchers selected hundreds of the most popular videos from each of the ten hashtags. They then encoded each video on key topics with the help of encoders. The videos included promoting weight loss and positioning products to help you stay slim.
It turned out that such videos broke about a billion views. Most of the videos are created and posted on the social network by white teenage girls and develop in the youth environment in general. In connection with this, scientists are alarmed, because such a lifestyle – abandoning a normal daily diet and pursuing weight loss on its own – is very dangerous for health and even life in adolescence. It is also important that anyone who does not conform to the imposed beliefs in such an environment is perceived as an enemy.
