In Russia, the production and sales of fortified wines increased sharply in 2022, with domestic ports becoming the engine of growth. Since January 2022, winemakers have produced approximately 2 million liters of Port wine; by comparison, they produced 1.9 million liters of fortified wines for the whole of last year.

Port has become a growth engine for fortified wines in Russia

Reasons for the growth include the exit of counterfeit Port wines from the market, low wine prices, the decline of more expensive imported beverages, and the expansion of distribution by Crimean wineries.

Alexander Lipilin, CEO of the Fort wine trader, and Andrey Ushakov, head of marketing at the Luding Group, believe that the fortified wine category in Russia consists mainly of drinks in an affordable price segment, while foreign ones cost from 1,300 rubles. per bottle and do not touch the Russians in the target segment.

Lipilin suggested that the growth is due to low base effect. Fanagoria CEO Pyotr Romanishin said that one in three restaurants is now interested in Russian liqueur wines, as foreign ones are no longer available.

In the spring, against the background of rising prices for 100% imported alcohol, restaurateurs began to replace it with Russian alcohol, the price of which did not increase so significantly. In this way, restaurant managers reduce costs, since there are fewer consumers willing to pay for drinks at the new prices.
