Microsoft co-founder’s art collection sold at auction for a record $1.5 billion Paul Allen has collected more than 150 pieces over the years. The proceeds from the sale will go to charity.
Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s art collection sold at Christie’s auction for $1.5 billion, The Guardian writes. The amount was a record in history for a single auction of works of art. The auction house hoped to sell the collection for just $1 billion.
The Paul Allen Collection contains more than 150 works of art by Sandro Botticelli, Auguste Renoir, Vincent van Gogh, Gustav Klimt, Paul Cezanne, and others. Paul Allen collected the collection for many years and, as the publication makes clear, he did not rely on the opinion of experts in the art world and hired specialists.
Proceeds from the sale of artwork will be donated to charity in accordance with the wishes of Paul Allen. The Microsoft co-founder died in 2018 at the age of 65 from lymphoma.
