A group of scientists from Karolinska University studied 33 studies on the effect of loud sounds on people’s ears.

20,000 young people aged 12 to 34. Let’s say that half of them listen to music at a volume of up to 112 decibels. For comparison, the noise from a helicopter reaches the level of 110 decibels.

It has been observed that loudness above 85 decibels can lead to hearing damage: destruction of the auditory nerve and reduction in the number of hair cells. With a mild outcome, a person’s hearing will decrease and soon hearing loss.

Now there are 2.8 billion people in the age group on Earth. Ultimately, between 670 million and 1.35 billion people are at risk of hearing loss.

iOS has a special system that catches loud sounds. While listening to music, AirPods will automatically lower the volume if they are told that it might harm you.

To do this, you need to activate the toggle switch. Loud sounds quieter on the menu Settings -> Sounds, haptics -> Headphone security. We advise you to turn it on right now if you haven’t done it before. [BMJ Global Health]
