Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of the Ethereum cryptocurrency, commented on Elon Musk’s actions to block Twitter accounts. The crypto enthusiast compared the social network CEO’s management methods to authoritarian ones.

Ethereum founder called Musk’s account blocking “the path to authoritarianism”

Last week, Elon Musk wrote on his Twitter account that the social network will block all profiles that provide information about someone’s location in real time. The businessman saw this as a threat to personal integrity and security.

One of the first to be blocked was the ElonJets account, which tracks the Twitter owner’s aircraft. In addition, the profile for CelebJets, which tracks the private planes of other celebrities, fell under the restrictions.

Responding to a post endorsing Musk’s actions, Buterin said Twitter’s policy is “modernized to reflect Elon’s personal views on very specific situations.”

“Acting ‘quickly and decisively in response to catalysts’ when it comes to banning something is the path to authoritarianism,” Buterin wrote.

The Ethereum founder also criticized the censorship of links to rival social network Mastodon, calling the move “really bad.” He attached a screenshot of a failed attempt to tweet a link to his profile.

Buterin suggested that Twitter notify users a month before any new content moderation rules take effect.

As for the accounts of journalists tracking location, Elon Musk conducted a survey on his account, for which he removed the block:

“The people have spoken. The blocking of accounts that reveal my location has now been lifted.”
