Netflix has released the animated film Pinocchio by Guillermo Del Toro.
Del Toro seems to have gone through all sorts of genres already: from action films to thrillers and horror. In the latter, he was particularly successful. But then the director decided to take on a completely new genre for himself – a musical, also in an animated format based on the cult book by Carlo Collodi.
Two versions of the film adaptation were released this year, owned by Disney, formerly Robert Zemeckis. And… it failed.
But what happened this time? We have already reviewed the novelty and are in a hurry to share our impressions.
very different Pinocchio
This cartoon is fundamentally different from what we did before. The general idea remains the same, but it is presented from a completely different angle.
What is the movie about: Italian craftsman Geppetto, along with his son Carlo, helps rebuild the church during World War II.
One day, when the craftsmen were working on the statue of learning, a bomb falls on the building, and Carlo dies. A heartbroken father buries his son and wishes for many years that he would return.
In desperation, Geppetto wished that the doll, which he had made repeatedly at night, would come to life. And his wish came true. The doll became a living boy with her own feelings and thoughts. But not everyone is happy with this arrangement …
History is as old as the world, we know it very well since childhood. However, Guillermo Del Toro decided to watch it and show Pinocchio from the other side.
There are a variety of topics raised here: loss, despair, heartache, fatherhood, love, war and much more. The director and part-time screenwriter philosophizes throughout the coverage.
Ultimately, the authors discuss the importance of misunderstanding, the nature of fascism, and the transience of life.
As Guillermo himself noted, this cartoon is not for kids. This is not a standard fairy tale with a happy ending, fairy fairies and a carefree childhood. Del Toro comparable wooden doll to Frankenstein’s monster:
This is a creature that was born in an unnatural way through the efforts of his father, from whom he subsequently moved away, and now he himself must know the losers, pain and loneliness.
In fact, the screenwriter wanted to film another book in 2008, but its consequences were in vain. Many abandoned studios because of the high cost of ideas (shooting dolls), but in the end there were those who were ready for this.
The picture fully justifies itself. It allows you to tell the story through yourself and compare yourself with the main characters. The director was able to create a truly emotional picture with manifestations of cruelty that only emphasize the brightness.
He shows that even in the darkest times you can find the remnants of love, everything is based on it.
This history of ability break through the emotions of even the biggest “crackers”. It is not just touching, but causes a rethinking of some life fragments.
The authors of a regular review bring to attention the features of the often ugly formations created. What is worth only one Pinocchio, who looks more like a living corpse that appeared on a cute boy from a tree from the Disney version. But this does not negate the fact that he has his own soul, fears and desire.
For the most part, the characters here are designed as collective images. There is no specifics, everything works at an abstract level. But the main thing is that the deep idea is clear as day.
Visually not unique, but this cartoon really suits
You can see the colossal work of 40 animators who worked on the picture. They regularly take place in Italy, the underworld and other scenery. Yes, and they work effectively.
Master Del Toro create an illusion that can’t be broken. It touches the soul, but also the general aesthetics. Part of the movie looks natural due to its road.
And what is most interesting, the component of the musical is woven here as organically as possible. There are not so many songs and dances, some of them are generally sad. Many such points were clearly identified as causing harm.
Musical accompaniment is above all praise. It helps more to penetrate the trap and better understand how to quickly.
Must see, no options at all
You’ve never seen Pinocchio like this. And this is exactly the kind of rethinking we deserve in 2022.
One of the rare cases when you really needed to watch a movie urgently. “Pinocchio by Guillermo Del Toro” masterfully punches through emotions and reflect on the future.
I recommend.
