Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) new wireless charging standard: Qi2. The news emerged during the warm-up of CES 2023, the tech show to be held in Las Vegas (USA) from January 5-8.

In order to unify wireless charging formats, Qi2 officially brings iPhone MagSafe technology to Android devices. New compatible mobile phones and chargers are expected to hit the market by the end of 2023.

According to WPC, the legacy Qi format and certified devices still cause compatibility doubts among users and even retailers. This question prompted the consortium to seek a new global standard for wireless charging.

Like this Qi2 was created using Apple’s MagSafe technology and there were contributions from other members of the body. The first goal was to develop a perfectly aligned magnetic energy structure to be adopted by different devices.

“Our standard assures consumers that devices are safe and compatible with other brands. “Qi2 will become the global standard for wireless charging and provide that assurance to users and retailers,” said WPC Executive Director Paul Struhsaker.

In addition to the advanced experience, new format promises to be faster and more efficient. At first they will run at speeds of up to 15 W and will need to be boosted in future versions.

The expectation is that users will be able to use a wireless charging standard.

The evolution of wireless charging

Currently, Apple’s MagSafe chargers operate at speeds up to 15W. According to major technology, this is the ideal power ratio for fast charging and maintaining the integrity of the device’s battery.

However, WPC is expected to expand this standard with the release of Qi2 on Android devices. Also, a unified format for wireless charging allows the technology to continue to evolve to meet user needs.
