Last year, the Supreme Court agreed to hear a case involving section 230 of the US Communications Ethics Act. The passage of this law allowed to protect technology companies from liability for the content that people create on various sites and services. Without such protection, tech companies could be subject to lawsuits and even further scrutiny. But now they want to cancel.
Google argues that removing the section will not only make companies accountable for the words of others on the platforms, but will also force Google and other tech companies to more actively moderate content.
The company said the loss of episode 230 would create a “dystopia” where providers would be under constant legal pressure to censor controversial content.
