From July 2021 to June 2022, the personal data of 970.5 million people was freely available on the Internet. During the same period last year, 24 million record rows were leaked online.

Leaks of personal data increased 40 times in 2022

About 823 million lines relate to the February leak from CDEK’s delivery service database, other cases account for 147.5 million lines, Group-IB told Izvestia.

Above all, the attackers were interested in state-owned companies – 30% of cases, IT companies – 16%, financial, energy and industrial sectors – 10% each, said Denis Kuvshinov, head of cyberthreat research at Positive Technologies’ center of security experts. .

Many hackers are pursuing a monetary interest in exposing data, but most are trying to cause financial or reputational damage to a company or country, analysts said.

According to Group-IB forecasts, the intensity of attacks will continue to grow in 2023. Hackers will develop new tools and use solutions that are difficult to recognize and detect. At the same time, the volume of data leaked to the public is unlikely to increase.
