The scientists fed the mice either a control diet or the same diet supplemented with a drug called alpelisib. The drug is used to treat certain types of breast cancer. Mice fed a diet containing the drug not only lived longer, but also showed some signs of improvement in old age. However, researchers are wary of use in humans, as some negative markers of aging, such as decreased bone mass, were also found in drug-treated rodents.

On average, the lifespan of the mice increased by 10% to about three years.
