The cybercrime industry seems to be booming as big tech companies are laying off thousands of workers. Hacking organizations have structured themselves as a business, hiring “professionals” on the dark web with attractive monthly salaries, vacations and health insurance.

These results are part of the report released Monday, 30th by cybersecurity company Kaspersky after analyzing more than 200,000 job postings posted on 155 confidential websites between March 2020 and June 2022.

A third of the positions offered by employers were full-time, and a similar percentage indicated flexible hours. The highest compensation identified by Kaspersky analysts was US$20,000 (approximately R$102,000).effective hackers can earn up to $15,000 (R$77,000) per month.

How does hiring a hacker work?

As with any recruitment process, selection begins with an analysis of the submitted resume or portfolio and even an interview session with the candidate for the vacant position. In numerous ads set by Kaspersky, employers of the future promised pay around US$300 (R$1,500) for just one test paper.

In another more advanced proposal, the test consisted of a step-by-step scan where the candidate had to encrypt a test DLL (library) within 24 hours to make it undetectable by the antivirus.

With so many advantages, it’s worth remembering the risks of applying for a job offered by employers on the dark web, and not having a legally signed employment contract is the least of them. Since the priority of cyber crime investigation teams is to obtain the identity of the hackers, the possibility of exposure – and arrest – is always present.
