Russia’s population decreased by 550 thousand people during the year, Rosstat reported. The gap between the number of people living in rural areas and cities has increased; the latter turned out to be three times higher.
Rosstat presented updated data on the population of Russia and the country’s federal districts. According to data at the beginning of 2023, 146.4 million people live in Russia; during the year, the country’s population decreased by 550 thousand people. 109.6 million live in cities, the rest in rural areas.
More than 40 million people live in the Central Federal District, which has become the most densely populated district in Russia. Of these, 13 million – in Moscow and 8.5 million – in the Moscow region. The population of St. Petersburg, according to Rosstat, is 5.6 million people.
The least populated district, according to the department, is the Far East with a population of 8 million people. 16.6 million people live in the Siberian and Southern districts, 12 million in the Urals and 10 million in the North Caucasus.
In 2022, there were four more million-plus cities in Russia: Krasnoyarsk, Perm, Voronezh and Krasnodar received this status. In total, there are 16 cities in the country with a population of more than 1 million people.
The Rosstat statistics did not include the population of four new regions of the country, the department emphasized.
