The authors of the new study argue that commuting is time independent of home and work. It makes it possible to recuperate and transition mentally after work.

Study participants said they used their travel time both to mentally transition from work to roles at home and to begin psychological recovery after a day’s work. For example, on days when the commute was longer than average, people reported higher levels of psychological disconnection from work and were more relaxed.
