The study’s authors said there may be a treatment that reduces the risk of heart disease associated with this genetic variant. For example, a common diabetes drug may improve vascular function in genetically modified mice. Scientists suggest that the drug could be used as a preventative measure in high-risk patients, namely carriers of this genetic variant who drink heavily.

In addition, this condition is associated with an increased risk of atrial fibrillation.
