The authors used death data from 162 countries and the Peace Index from 2008 to 2017. Countries with the highest levels of violence also turned out to have the highest uncertainty about life expectancy. Conflict-related death at a young age is the main cause in the Middle East, while a similar pattern is emerging in homicide and interpersonal violence in Latin America.

At the same time, the uncertainty of life expectancy in such countries is experienced even by those not directly involved in violence.
