Yandex managed to recover the Yandex Afisha brand through the court. The company registered this trademark in 2019, but in 2020 the decision was challenged following a complaint from Afisha Company LLC.

“Yandex” through the court regained the trademark “Yandex Afisha”

RIA Novosti reports on the decision of the intellectual property court.

The court ruled to restore legal protection and return to Yandex the Yandex Afisha trademark, which it registered with Rospatent in 2019, but whose registration decision was challenged in 2020.

Rospatent’s lawyers insisted that the copyright holder used the Afisha trademark and that its use in Yandex Afisha could mislead a person.

Afisha Company LLC, in 2020, challenged the decision to register the trademark by Yandex. The latter, in turn, claimed that “Yandex Afisha” is an element that is an indivisible semantic construction.

Yandex also cited survey data, according to which respondents associated the word “poster” with an advertisement, and Yandex Afisha was associated with a ticketing service. As a result, Yandex managed to defend its case in court.
