Google suspends Chrome update on Windows 7 and 8

Google will no longer update its web browser Chrome for Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems. The software is used by more than 3.2 billion devices, representing about 40% of internet users.

Any vulnerabilities may not be patched and there will be no protection against emerging threats such as new malware. This can put users of an older version of Chrome at risk when surfing the web, especially since Microsoft is no longer updating Windows 7 and 8.

Alternative for users

Windows 8 doesn’t have many users, but Windows 7 is still very popular. According to Statcounter, although Microsoft suspended support and updates in early 2020, about 10% of operating system users are using Windows 7, while about 18% are using Windows 11.

While it’s understandable that some people want to stick with an operating system they already know, it’s important to highlight the risks of using an outdated or unpatched browser or operating system.

For Windows 7 and 8 users who rely on Chrome, the best option is to upgrade to Windows 10 or 11. If your device can’t run a newer version of Windows, another option is to consider an open-source and open-source operating system like Linux. It supports Chrome.
