Hundreds of people from the Industrial Metaverse team were laid off when Microsoft decided to shut down the Industrial Metaverse project.

Microsoft canceled the project to create an industrial metaverse

This was reported by a source close to the company to the La Información portal.

He explained that the team, made up mostly of a group known internally as Project Bonsai, fell victim to Microsoft’s plan announced last month to lay off 10,000 employees, or about 4.5% of its workforce.

Microsoft assembled the backbone of the Industrial Metaverse team in October to launch API development for power plant control systems, industrial robotics, and transportation networks.

Analysts at The Information believe the reduction of the project is due to a review of the company’s priorities.

Microsoft plans to invest more in the development of generative AI (OpenAI, ChatGPT and other developments).

It is known that as part of the layoffs within Microsoft, they also closed the AltspaceVR social virtual reality platform, which the corporation bought from founder Eric Romo in 2017.
