Upland and Decentraland, the two established web3 platforms, will bring the Brazilian carnival into the world of the metaverse with interoperability. The festive momesca online was inaugurated on Sunday, 11th in Decentraland Brasil and now continues during the carnival with live coverage of carnivals in Salvador, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, the court of Mangueira has been recreated in Upland and will host virtual events for carnival fans. Players will be able to purchase NFT costumes and ornaments from the samba school for their avatars, as well as check out the “As Áfricas que a Bahia Sings” themed parade that pays homage to the Araketu, Olodum and Ilê Aiyê groups.

In Salvador, carnival block Fissura will have activations on Saturday (18) in partnership with Musigreen, which combines entertainment and sustainable causes with blockchain technology. Upland’s mascot Miles, the lama, will join the metaverse in the capital city of Bahia, accompanying the electric trio with the group Filhos de Jorge and DJs DH8 and Cady.

carnival and metaverse

“Carnival and the metaverse have no boundaries,” says Ney Neto, who heads Upland’s operations in Latin America. Rio de Janeiro had its first festive momesca experience on web 3.0 in April last year when Sandbox and Decentraland accompanied Parade of Samba Schools.

Brazil isn’t the only country in the Metaverse to promote carnival. On February 4, the Venice festivities opened online. Using the new Instagram filters, people can virtually experience the traditional masks and costumes of the festivities in the traditional Italian city.
