Related work was recently conducted by Michal Kosinski, an assistant professor of organizational behavior at Stanford. He tested various versions of the GPT-3 on tasks designed to measure “theory of thought”—cognitive abilities that allow one person to understand what’s going on in another person’s head.
The latest version of ChatGPT was able to solve 94% of the thinking theory tasks. So the AI showed results at the level of a nine-year-old.
While the results of the study should be approached with caution because modern AI is a “black box,” Kosinski believes studying this technology could help explain human cognition.
