A new animated series “Anthology of Russian Horror: Red Cast” has started in Russia.
Its display is immediately on two streaming platforms – more.tv and Kinopoisk. The series is based on the works of Alexander Pushkin, Alexei Tolstoy, Alexander Grin and even Dmitry Bykov. Each episode was handled by directors from all over the world.
We have already reviewed the novelty and are in a hurry to share our impressions. This is definitely a major hit among Russian cinema.
Terrible – cut it out
Each series has its own plot, they are not combined into a single set and are not covered by each other. At its own discretion, the series resembles the foreign “Love, Death and Robots”.
What is the series about: this is an anthology of six terrible phenomena created by directors in different animation techniques. Something terrible happens in each of them: a boy gets stuck in cyberspace, having bought into the demon’s promises; a journalist from a dystopian Moscow into a mysterious depth; brave prince – with nomadic ghouls.
Each episode is made in its own style, they are unique in drawing and animation. At the moment, only 3 of the six series are available. The rest will be released on February 23rd.
It’s hard to rate the show in general terms. Every story has its own zest, which draws attention to the screen. The very first series sets a high degree of pathos, but then it rapidly diminishes in the next episode based on the story of Alexei Tolstoy “Ghoul’s Family”. If before that cruelty prevailed, then in this case the emphasis is on humor, which manifested itself even in the most terrible scenes.
At the same time, all authors have a single idea – to show reality, to ridicule the sins of mankind. I would especially like to note the episode about the aid trains. So far this is the strongest part of all. The main question for her is that they don’t let people go to Moscow or they don’t let them out of it?
In each series there is a storehouse of philosophy, which is based on a certain primary source. And as interesting sketches, it looks fresh and interesting.
To call the animated series a terrible language does not turn. However, he spooky precisely in terms of irony over our lives. It is worth thinking about and it becomes uncomfortable.
Unlike “Love, Death and Robots”, there is no attempt to gain attention and no repetition of all sorts of different cases of observation. On the contrary, the creators consider rather gloomy topics, some difficult to perceive. That’s for sure cartoon not for kidsit is aimed at an adult audience.
The good news is that directors and screenwriters immediately catch the thick of things. No backstories are required here, the general message is immediately clear. Timing from 30-40 minutes to 12-20 minutes.
The moral of each story can be seen in different ways, it depends only on personal perception. The authors do not issue their error, but only raise general questions. And this is the right decision.
So far, of all the available episodes, Mozharovo looks the most striking. It opens up most of all during the entire period of accumulation and allows you to penetrate events, simultaneously transferring them to our world.
Visually – one of the main features of the phenomenon
Communicate with the series “Love, death and robots” there is almost nothing here. Only that the series is created in its own way.
Purely impact they strongly resemble each other. Each episode has own style. Sometimes it is quite simple, and sometimes even too detailed. there is almost nothing similar in such a crop, it still looks quite fresh.
Yes, there are no big budgets here, but they are not required for the quality development of good ideas. The main thing is that they often visit stories that are interesting to film.
It is a pity that there are no memorable soundtracks. But this is not scary. The musical component has a visual style and supports storage well. It’s important that it’s done well. The rest is not so important.
Look it’s a good movie
a set of timing of each series, it is quite possible to spend time on them.
They bring up important topics, discuss them in a short time and ridicule authenticity. The biggest appearance of such a project for Russia is a fast-paced experiment needed for the domestic film industry.
Looking forward to the rest of the episodes. We believe it will work just as well.
