These ancient highways are dams made of stone, according to a new study. These – along with more than 400 settlements – indicate an advanced level of organization.
“This is the first highway system we have in the world,” the scientists said.
These highways were confusing and sometimes towered over marshy areas. The stones were also covered with a white material that made the road more visible in the moonlight. So far, researchers have identified about 177 kilometers of highways. Their height can reach five meters.
