The tool uses a “fine-tuned GPT2 model,” according to a researcher working on the project at the University of Copenhagen. Text queries like “many pipes, lots of enemies, few blocks, low height” are almost exactly like real Super Mario Bros.

The researcher acknowledged that although the tool “works well” for the most part, it is not always successful in generating levels based on clues.
