Russian manufacturers of electronics and semiconductors are calling for the introduction of tariffs on the import of bank, transport and SIM cards in the amount of 50-100%. They worry that the current zero tariffs will encourage imports at the expense of local factories.
The price difference between a Chinese bank card and a Russian one with a Chinese chip can be as much as 500%, Kommersant learned.
An interlocutor of the publication on the payment card market said that Russian manufacturers are in favor of introducing protection rights, as they fear “the expansion of Chinese manufacturers of smart cards in the Russian Federation.”
Until 2022, suppliers bought chips from European companies, after the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, supplies stopped, and local manufacturers began looking for Chinese counterparts. Now Chinese manufacturers want to enter the Russian payment card market on their own and not through chip supply, the source explained.
Card users, banks and mobile operators oppose the fees to avoid restricting competition.
