The world’s most popular scientific magazine reported the fifth person in history to be completely cured of HIV. This is a 53-year-old man from Germany who underwent a stem cell transplant in 2014. Signs of active infection with the virus disappeared in 2019.

Fifth fully cured of confirmed HIV

The fifth case of a complete cure for HIV was reported in the scientific journal Nature Medicine. Scientists have published the results of a study involving a 53-year-old man from Germany who underwent a stem cell transplant.

The operation was carried out in 2014 and in 2019 not a single active sign of HIV disease was found in the man. Also in 2019, a man nicknamed the “Düsseldorf patient” stopped taking his HIV medication.

The patient’s doctor, Bjorn-Erik Ole Jensen, confirmed that the HIV was completely cured and did not go into long-term remission.

The first person to be completely cured of HIV was Timothy Ray Brown, who defeated the virus in 2009. All the patients, including the one in “Düsseldorf”, underwent a stem cell transplant.

According to the UN, 38.4 million people worldwide are affected by HIV.
