Amid the conflict in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry triggered by the OpenAI GPT model at the end of 2022, Meta announced its new language model LLaMA (Large Language Model Meta AI) this Friday (24). According to the company’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, this is the “state of the art” in productive artificial intelligence.
According to the manager, the model shows promise “in composing texts, conversing, summarizing written materials, and in more complex tasks such as solving math problems or predicting protein structures.”
In the last few months, the rush for AI-based language models by big companies has been intense. Google introduced the Bard; Microsoft invested in OpenAI and incorporated ChatGPT into Bing; Chinese Baidu is also working on its own version.
Unlike the publicly available ChatGPT, Meta’s LLaMA is geared towards AI and language development professionals. The model was trained in 20 languages with more speakers, including the Latin and Cyrillic alphabets.
Who is LLAMA for?
Divided into four language models with different capabilities, LLaMA will be available free of charge to researchers, laboratories, NGOs and universities. “Meta is committed to this open research model and we are making our new model available to the AI research community,” Zuckerberg wrote.
Therefore, LLaMA can assist researchers in developing practices and approaches that can circumvent problems in other language models, including biased, toxic interpretations, and preconceived biases.
“As the base model, LLaMA is designed to be versatile and can be applied to many different use cases compared to a model developed for a specific task,” Meta emphasizes.
