The team has been developing the biomaterial for over a decade. In the final step, the scientists had to remove the large particles from the hydrogel so that they could be infused intravenously.
When tested in rodents, the researchers expected the biomaterial to migrate from blood vessels into tissues as spaces form between endothelial cells after a heart attack. The drug binds to cells, closing gaps and accelerating the healing of blood vessels, as well as reducing inflammation.
Further experiments on rats showed that biomaterial particles could also be used to treat traumatic brain injury and pulmonary arterial hypertension.
