The reason for this penalty is to limit competition within the brand’s proprietary app store, the App Store. FAS filed a lawsuit in 2019 following a complaint from Kaspersky Lab.
For example, the complaint alleged that Apple unreasonably rejected versions of Kaspersky Safe Kids, its parental control program.
In 2020, the FAS found Cupertinos guilty of restricting competition in the app distribution market and ordered the company to remove provisions that allowed third-party apps to be denied for placement on the App Store.
Apple tried to appeal the regulator’s decision, but the court upheld the agency’s position. On February 27, 2023, the FAS announced that it had fully complied with Apple’s prescription.
