Diarrhea symptoms are usually unpleasant and associated with severe dehydration, which causes dangerous symptoms, but in most cases, with adequate fluid and medication intake, the condition can improve.

But CDC in the United States are currently on alert for outbreaks of shigella, a type of diarrhea that contains superbugs drug-resistant and has a death rate of about 20,000 deaths per year.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention details what Shigella is made of:

“Shigella it is one of the most common sources of diarrhea in the world, with about 450,000 people infected each year in the United States. Most cases are “mild”, but you still suffer from diarrhea, fever and cramps for a week. Sometimes the diarrhea becomes bloody, a condition known as dysentery. Less commonly, the infection can cause complications such as severe dehydration, seizures, kidney damage, and sepsis (often due to bacteria entering the bloodstream). Severe disease is more likely in the youngest and also in people with weakened immune systems.”

According to the World Health Organization, shigella kills about 200,000 people a year. Most cases go away on their own, and the usual treatment is to simply drink fluids and rest. But when these infections become more severe or occur in people at higher risk of severe illness, antibiotics are used to shorten their duration.

In a health bulletin released over the weekend, the agency said 5% of cases in 2022 were extremely drug resistant.
