Retail analytics firm Glassdoor has identified 15 brands that pay line staff the highest salaries. An hour of work can cost them more than $16 (up to $20).
The US is currently experiencing a staff shortage at retail stores, according to Business Insider, which commissioned a study from Glassdoor (January 1, 2022 – March 3, 2023).
To form a workforce, companies are willing to offer very high salaries even for personnel without deep qualification. With a median hourly wage of $7.25 nationwide (not growing since 2009), some brands can pay as much as $16-20 per hour.
Only companies with at least 1,000 employees were included in the study, and the analysis included a minimum of 30 positions (from sales staff to cashiers).
List of leaders from lowest to highest cost per hour:
- 15 Sephora: $16.51
- 14 Lululemon: $16.54
- 13 Buc-ee’s: $16.66
- 12Uniqlo: $16.73
- 11 living spaces: $16.87
- 10 Trader Joe’s: $16.91
- 9. New Seasons Market: $17.17
- 8 Neiman Marcus: $17.18
- 7 REI: $17.23
- 6 Raymour and Flanigan: $17.48
- 5. IKEA: $17.49
- 4 Saks Fifth Avenue: $17.65
- 3. Costco: $18.02
- 2 Aritzias: $19.04
- 1 Patagonia: $20.04
For comparison: in Russia, the cumulative nominal monthly average salary in 2022 amounted to just over 64 thousand rubles (according to Rosstat).
Thus, with 247 eight-hour workdays, the average hourly rate was 388 rubles per day, which, at 76 rubles per dollar, is about $5.
And if we count on the minimum wage basis, then the rate will be just over a dollar.
