An international team of researchers comparing reports from 2000 to 2019 found that rates increased for all metabolic diseases, including hypertension, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
The most significant increase in cases of these diseases was observed in countries with high average income, education level and fertility. However, regardless of these factors, an upward trend was observed worldwide.
The death rate from obesity did not change significantly from 2000 to 2019 and remains the highest of all diseases studied. However, an estimated 160.2 million years of years lost due to obesity-related premature death is in 2019 alone.
