Spotify now has a variety of “feeds” to find songs, podcasts and audiobooks very similar to TikTok, or stories from a popular but blocked social network in Russia. Spotify’s “feeds” show videos paired with music or podcasts, some with subtitles.

According to a statement from Spotify, the company has evidence that listeners “become loyal fans” after watching such content. Songs and podcasts on the service were previously accompanied by videos, but the new redesign puts more emphasis on them.

According to George Howard, professor of music business management at Berklee College of Music, Spotify’s hiatus from TikTok seems like a solution that deprives Spotify of its own identity. Wired writes that forcing people to watch videos means users will have to change the “environment.” People used Spotify for music, and algorithms now tell them to watch videos too. Of course, not everyone likes this approach. But only time will tell if this will make the app worse.
