Surgeons can treat AF if the disease is not amenable to medical treatment. A long, flexible tube is inserted through a vein into a blood vessel in the heart. The traditional method is thermal ablation, where heat or extreme cold acts on the tissues causing the arrhythmia and destroys them to prevent recurrence.

The new study suggested using electrical pulses instead of temperature for this. They have been found to be as effective as thermal energy in the treatment of AF. It is also faster and has less risk of thermal complications.

This technique, called pulsed field ablation, uses electrical pulses to create tiny holes in the membranes of heart muscle cells, resulting in cell death. Previously, this method was used to treat cancer by targeting and killing tumor cells, but recently it has been considered suitable for the treatment of arrhythmias.
