On the social network TikTok, people started posting videos with the hashtag #LuckyGirlSyndrome. The point is, when they start repeating so-called affirmations regularly, such as “I sincerely believe that the best things happen to me” or “No matter what it looks like right now, I always succeed”, life starts to improve.

Just wishing for something good to happen may not be effective enough. But many #LuckyGirlSyndrome supporters point to the power of positive thinking. Is there any truth in this?

On the one hand, scientific articles point out that just telling yourself that you are lucky and imagining without taking any action to achieve your goals is ineffective. It may even backfire.

On the other hand, there are many studies that prove that positive thinking provides certain advantages in life. On average, optimists are healthier, happier and live longer. Experts believe this is because positive expectations reduce stress and anxiety.

Also, optimistic-minded people are inspired by their own view of the time and effort it takes to achieve their goals. Hoping for the best and motivation can really pay off, especially if you’re working hard. So, affirmations can be really helpful, but repeating something to yourself every day isn’t enough.
