The news is not good for DoNotPlay. The startup behind the “world’s first robot lawyer” created by Joshua Browder is being sued by ex-consumers who accused the company of misleading and misleading them. The lawsuit was filed in San Francisco, United States, on March 3 and was made public last Thursday (9).

As the procedural document reveals, DoNotPlay is primarily accused of identifying itself as “wrong” and “illegal”. As noted in the previous paragraph, the company claims to have created the “world’s first robot lawyer,” something that has been questioned by the startup’s former clients. The company was also accused of making false promises that made people believe they were getting quality legal documents and advice when they actually didn’t.

“Unfortunately for its customers, DoNotPlay is not a real robot, neither a lawyer nor a law firm. DoNotPlay has no law degree, is not endorsed by any jurisdiction, and is not overseen by any lawyer,” the text says. Finally, the document accuses the firm of violating California law by “applying unlicensed law.”

What does DoNotPlay do?

DoNotPlay started gaining fame online by presenting itself as a company that can help people navigate legal bureaucracies and simple legal issues like avoiding unfair fines, requesting refunds, and canceling malicious subscriptions.

In early 2023, the company even announced that it would integrate an AI into its platform for the purpose of debating certain cases before a judge. The plan didn’t work out, despite the technology’s creator offering $1 million to any lawyer who would let the AI tool “argue” in his place before the United States Supreme Court.

Since then, DoNotPlay has been the target of several criticisms, pointing to the bugs and uncertainties surrounding the platform. For now, the future of the company remains uncertain.
