Developers no longer need to copy and paste code into ChatGPT. If Work with Apps is enabled, the app will automatically copy the code snippet the user is working with into the chatbot as context along with the request.

However, unlike other popular AI programming tools like Cursor or GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT cannot yet write code directly in developer applications.

The new feature is still far from a full AI agent, but teaching ChatGPT to understand other applications is a “key step” toward creating such a system, an OpenAI spokesperson said.

The option is available to ChatGPT Plus ($20 per month) and Team ($30) subscription holders. Business and educational users will have access in a few weeks. There’s no word yet on whether Work With Apps will work with apps other than VS Code, Xcode, TextEdit, Terminal, and iTerm2, or when the feature will come to Windows.

OpenAI launched the ChatGPT app on macOS in June. Currently, the service only works on devices with Apple Silicon M1 processors and newer with OS versions 14 and 15.
