The Thai government has approved a draft extradition agreement with Russia. This is reported by The Nation Thailand with reference to the statement of the official representative of the Cabinet of Ministers Rachada Dhnadirek.

Thai authorities approve extradition deal with Russia

According to her, the current agreement is in line with the extradition agreements concluded between Thailand and other states. Dhnadirek added that the document does not require parliamentary approval as it does not affect Thailand’s economy, trade, society, land and investment.

According to the publication, the agreement was approved in the context of the mass migration of Russians. The Nation cites figures that “tens of thousands of Russians” hoping to avoid conscription and the economic fallout from the conflict with Ukraine have traveled to Thailand since February 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin approved the government’s proposal to sign an extradition treaty between Russia and Thailand in early February last year. Currently, Russia has about 65 international agreements on cooperation in the field of extradition, including agreements with China, Iraq, Iran and other countries.

  • Earlier this week, authorities in Bali asked Indonesia’s immigration agency to tighten the visa regime for Russian tourists amid a large influx of late. It was also noted that they often received complaints about irregularities.
  • Before this, Kazakhstan, which became one of the centers of Russian emigration, introduced a new procedure for the stay of immigrants without a visa. So, in February 2023, the country forced long-time coming Russians to have a passport with them. And in January, Kazakhstan canceled the opportunity to extend the stay in the country for “visaran”, that is, to cross the border for a day and return.
