In one scientific study, experts found a link between gum disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Also, if you take care of your teeth and gums, you can improve your overall health and improve your quality of life.
However, teeth and gums aren’t the only things that affect overall health. Practitioner Dr. Paul Ettlinger noted that it is very important to pay attention to the appearance of the language. For example, a yellow tongue may indicate that a person smokes, has poor oral hygiene, or has thrush. Sometimes it indicates that the person is taking some kind of medicine or drinking a special liquid.
Dry mouth is more likely to occur in people who breathe mostly through their mouth rather than their nose. According to Ettlinger, saliva helps remove excess bacteria from the tongue.
A white tongue can also indicate the presence of certain diseases. This is leukoplakia, lichen planus, geographic tongue, mouth ulcers or candidal stomatitis.
A healthy tongue should be pink and have small nodules (papillae) on its surface, according to Tompkins Dental.
