Specifically, the researchers looked at whether players developed motor neuron diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, Parkinson’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
During the study, some kind of neurodegenerative disease was detected in 8.9% of the football players and 6.2% of the control group. That is, athletes fell ill almost one and a half times more often. Interestingly, this pattern was only observed among field players. The goalkeepers didn’t see that.
