According to experts, the fungus is also becoming increasingly resistant to treatment. The study’s authors note that 10,683 cases of C. auris were reported in the United States between 2019 and 2021.

In addition, the number of clinical infection cases increased from year to year during the study period. In 2019, there was a 44% increase compared to 2018, a 59% increase in 2020 compared to 2019, and a 95% increase in 2021 compared to 2020.

The study also found that 7,413 cases included people who were carriers of the fungus but did not show any symptoms before routine screening. These people can still spread the pathogen and subsequently develop symptoms of the disease.

Recall that C. auris is a type of fungus that infects humans and spreads to organs through the blood. Most often, infection occurs in medical and long-term care facilities.

It is rare in healthy people, but for people who are immunocompromised or who regularly receive invasive treatment for other diseases, C. auris infection can be fatal.
