Bancel addressed the Senate Health, Education, Work and Pensions Committee, chaired by Senator Bernie Sanders. He accused Moderna of “being rich” and participating in “an unprecedented level of corporate greed” seen in the pharmaceutical industry as a whole:This vaccine would not exist without the partnership and expertise of the NIH and significant investment from this country’s taxpayers.”, said Sanders. “Here is the thanks this country’s taxpayers received from Moderna for this huge investment: They thank the US taxpayers by offering a 400 percent increase in the price of the Covid vaccine.”.

Defending in every possible way the company’s decision to raise prices, Bancel also rejected the role played by NIH scientists in the development of the vaccine, emphasizing that the company had established its platform before the pandemic with a private investment of $3.8 billion.
