Vibrio vulnificus grows in warm, shallow coastal waters and can infect humans through a cut or insect bite. A new study shows that the number of V. vulnificus infections along the US East Coast has increased from 10 to 80 per year over a 30-year period. In addition, every year cases of the disease occur further north.

Researchers estimate that by 2041-2060, the infection could spread and involve large communities around New York City. Combined with a growing and increasingly older population and more susceptible to infection, the annual number of cases could double. By 2081-2100, infections may appear in all eastern US states under moderate to high future emissions and warming scenarios.
