Elon Musk and a group of artificial intelligence experts have called for a six-month suspension of training for artificial intelligence systems that are more advanced than the previously introduced GPT-4 model, Reuters writes. In addition to Musk, the corresponding letter was signed by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. In total, more than 1,000 people joined the initiative.

Musk and Wozniak urged slowing down development of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4

The letter, published by the nonprofit Future of Life Institute, points out to an industry representative the potential threats from developing such systems. The authors of the warning see the prospect of political and economic upheaval. To avoid this, it is proposed to create and implement common security protocols within the six-month period indicated.

“Powerful artificial intelligence systems should only be developed when we are sure that their effects will be positive and their risks manageable,” the letter says.

The appearance of the OpenAI ChatGPT chat bot, which Musk was involved in founding, caused quite a stir. In less than six months, the chatbot managed to write many dissertations, “appeared” in court, and passed the exam to obtain a medical license in the United States.

As the media wrote, Elon Musk, against the background of the success of ChatGPT, decided to assemble his own team to create an analogue of the popular chat bot.

However, Reuters, citing the EU Transparency Register, the Future of Life Institute is primarily funded by the Elon Musk Foundation.

Earlier, the largest investment bank in the US, Goldman Sachs, presented a forecast of the impact of generative artificial intelligence on the labor market in the world. According to analysts from the credit institution, the widespread implementation of AI will affect up to 25% of jobs in developed economies.
