A team of scientists has developed GlucoScreen, a new system that uses the sensor capabilities of any smartphone to measure blood glucose levels without the need for a separate reader.

GlucoScreen’s accuracy is comparable to that of a standard glucometer. In a routine scan, a person applies a drop of blood to a test strip. The blood chemically reacts with the enzymes on the strip. A glucometer is used to analyze this reaction and obtain readings of blood sugar levels. In the new study, the scientists took the same test strip and added a low-cost circuit that transmits data from the reaction to any smartphone. GlucoScreen then processes the data and displays the result directly on the phone.
