The new paint was not made of pigment. Instead, color is structurally created by arranging nanoparticles. According to scientists, it takes only 1.4 kg to paint a Boeing 747. For comparison: conventional paint requires at least 454 kg.

The researchers also say that surfaces under the new paint stay 13 to 16 degrees Celsius cooler than those under regular paint.

As long as the new coating is only made in small quantities in the lab, we are a long way from mass production.
