To better understand how people interact with food photos, the authors of a new study analyzed more than 50,000 images from social networks. The scientists then tested these shots for various factors, including color composition, repeating patterns, image complexity, and estimated calorie density. They also looked at how each of these factors correlated with likes and comments.

Not surprisingly, pictures of high-calorie foods such as cookies, pastries, and scones received higher responses overall. Low-calorie foods like vegetables tended to require more gimmicks to get attention. That’s why you should use warm colors instead of cool colors, use repetitive elements, and place food on a clean background. For example, you can put strawberry slices on a salad in a repeating order. This will make the photo more attractive.
